About these home calculators
Home improvement projects require accurate material estimates before you buy. Over-ordering wastes money; under-ordering means a second trip that may not match the original batch. These calculators use standard construction formulas and include waste allowances appropriate for each material type — 10% for straight-lay tile, 15–20% for diagonal cuts, 10% for brick walls, and 15% for paving brick in herringbone bond.

How much waste should I add to material estimates?
Standard waste allowances by material: brick walls 10% (cuts and breakage), brick paving 10–15% (15% for herringbone), tile floors in running bond 10%, tile in diagonal layout 15–20%, gravel 5–10% for settlement. All calculators on this page include a waste input field so you can adjust based on project complexity. When in doubt, round up to the next full unit of sale — a full pallet or extra box is easier to return than making a second order from a different batch.
What gravel type is best for a driveway?
Crushed stone (angular, mechanically broken rock) outperforms rounded natural gravel for driveways because the angular edges interlock and compact. Recommended types: #57 crushed stone (¾ inch) for the surface layer, #3 or #4 large crushed stone for the base layer. Can I use the fertilizer calculator for vegetable gardens as well as lawns?
Yes — the fertilizer calculator works for any area where you know the target NPK application rate and the product's nutrient percentages. Vegetable gardens typically use lower nitrogen rates than lawns and benefit from higher phosphorus at planting time.
